A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block in the background helped us locate the footage.
We are verifying images and video posted this morning that show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the location of where the images originated was based on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
