This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the onset of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, provided by a first responder, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – originating from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: happy, varied, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
