The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
