Sam Fender has given the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize winnings to the MVT, which operates to preserve the United Kingdom's grassroots music venues.

The star was presented with the prize on mid-October as his new release his work was chosen as the top album of the previous year.

He has decided to give the cash to the MVT, in recognition of the vital role grassroots venues had in his early career.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the gigs I did around the area, and beyond, when I was starting out," remarked Sam Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these venues have permanently closed – roughly 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, top acts such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by including a modest fee to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

Sam Fender also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to assist numerous small stages across Britain.

The money helped locations that were facing potential shutdown due to issues caused by floods, fires and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and noise complaints.

Some locations received funding support in upgrading amenities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted artists and fans.

"The concept that revenue from shows in major spaces backs the local stages, where it all starts for performers like me, is just common sense," Fender has commented.

"The victory was ample," stated vocalist the singer. "The prize was the bonus but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success impacted somebody else's life."

In the past week, the trust revealed it had protected a couple of local spots in that region, by transferring them to community ownership.

The Joiners in Southampton and the second in that location were bought under the public acquisition program, which is funded by a national body and enthusiasts who purchase "shares" in the venues.
