Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

This news arrives less than a month after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
