Rory McIlroy salutes Spoty victory with individual and team awards.

Moments before his name was called, a trepidatious thought raced through the golfer's mind. He revealed he was hoping, "Not a racing champion once more."

"It's been a great night for golf," he stated. "Our game was recognized in such a major way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a huge moment for golf, and with any luck we can build upon that."

On this occasion, however, there was no last-minute surprise. The result was decisive, allowing a overjoyed McIlroy to reflect on a standout evening for both himself and the team winners, who were crowned team of the year.

Constant Motion

But rather than attend the aftershow party, McIlroy was already focusing on his upcoming event. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was heading straight back to Miami.

"I've had a hectic 24 hours," the golfer noted. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of downtime over Christmas."

Unfinished Business

However, McIlroy stated he has no plans to rest on his laurels, notwithstanding securing the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a few good years in me," he asserted.

"Additional major championships, season-long rankings, Ryder Cups, that's the aim. But provided that you feel like you can keep getting better and have the drive, that's the key."

Squad Celebration

Meanwhile, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the squad honor, also praised golf's remarkable night and his close friend's individual success.

"These become the memories that will remain with us indefinitely so to get the public's recognition for that is amazing," Fleetwood said. "Seeing Rory win, I think he has earned it so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood smiled before adding, "We're not the most popular are we!"

Next Targets

Fleetwood hopes to secure his initial major championship next year but he understands McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "As long as you want to be the ultimate competitor, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to enhance," he noted.

Club Support

Prior to his departure, an additional topic arose. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be tempted to do it again after his new triumphs?

"As long as they stop conceding four goals at home," McIlroy responded with a smile. "There is progress. There's a hint of positivity around."

Following a remarkable year, it's no wonder that Rory McIlroy is seeing the bright side.
