Preparations for Trump-Putin Talks Delayed Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

There are "no plans" for US President President Trump to meet Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has stated.

Last Thursday Trump stated he and the Russian president would meet in Budapest in the coming fortnight to examine the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the administration clarified the two had had a "constructive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "necessary".

The administration did not share further information on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts indicated his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with insiders claiming the president had pushed him to relinquish significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.

However, on this week the American president supported a peace initiative supported by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Leave it as is the way it is," he remarked.

Moscow has frequently resisted against pausing the current line of contact.

Moscow was only interested in "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, indicating that freezing the front line would only amount to a brief pause.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the conflict demanded attention, Lavrov said, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of maximalist demands that encompass the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its European partners.

Zelensky said discussions about the current lines were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday came ahead of reports that the US was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target inside Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had turned out to be a "significant input" in negotiations", he commented.
