New research indicates that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such medications should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
