NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans right away after his victory in November.

"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the need to directing all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," stated Mamdani in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its abundance of immigrant communities and international dining.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will always live a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Political Debate

In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

But his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment far removed from his humble Astoria digs.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's original era.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent stabilised, a policy where the city sets limits on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the price of rent outpaces the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
