Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant boost to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
