RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
