Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."
