Germany's City Leader Seriously Wounded in Knife Assault, Authorities Report
A newly-elected mayor in Germany's western region has been attacked with a knife and suffered severe wounds close to her residence, authorities state.
Iris Stalzer, 57, is a affiliate of the centre-left Social Democratic party (SPD) and assumed the mayoral role of the municipality in the North-Rhine Westphalia state in last month.
Local police say a significant response is in progress in the community. Investigators indicate every possibility is being checked, but they are considering a family connection.
The Chancellor condemned what he called "a terrible crime", stating: "We are concerned about the survival of the mayor-elect, Iris Stalzer, and wish for complete healing."
The SPD said its members were profoundly stunned by the incident.
Authorities say her two children - a daughter, 17, and a 15-year-old son - contacted emergency services to police at noon (11:00 British time).
The minors were subsequently removed for questioning and forensic investigation. A journalist present witnessed a teenager entering a law enforcement vehicle.
During the summer, there was an incident of domestic violence in the family, which was documented by authorities, security sources revealed.
