Gianni Infantino has opened the door to more tournaments held in winter and global club championships, declaring that the sport should remain open to new ideas about shifting key competitions from the summer period.

Discussions Underway for Future Match Timetable

Talks are currently happening about the calendar for the period after 2030, a key area of concern due to growing pressure caused by larger tournaments. FIFA has set up a working group to examine the issue, while the international organization has given itself a headache by granting the 2034 tournament to the Middle Eastern nation. The event will likely be staged in winter, as Qatar 2022 was. Infantino suggested football needs to adapt to separating from summer months in Europe.

“We're thoroughly examining specifics, we are discussing all the time,” he said. “This isn't only about a single tournament, it's broader consideration. Even to play in some European countries in July it is very, very hot.”

Enhancing the Competition Timetable

Infantino was speaking at the European club organization annual meeting in Rome. Similar opinions were voiced to numerous participants, stating: “We must consider the globalisation of soccer's international timetable.” He pointed to October and March as “times when worldwide competition is feasible.”

A major restructuring like this would cause ructions, though the organization's capacity to execute its vision might face obstacles should an official protest concerning the schedule enforcement, submitted to European authorities previously by league organizations, triggers legal processes.

Expanding the Club World Cup

FIFA is also looking at approaches to grow the Club World Cup. A 48-team structure is possible for its next edition, with the potential for preliminary qualification matches that reduces the total count to 32 teams. Infantino mentioned ambitious plans in his Rome speech, stating the organization would “work to see how to expand this tournament, even better, with greater influence.”

Potential Hosts for 2029

Spain and Morocco are favorites to host the 2029 event, which will take place in the summer, while other possibilities remain under evaluation. A quick comeback to the United States might be considered and sources suggest China, previously arranged to host the tournament in 2021 before the pandemic, continues to show interest.

The organization is contemplating holding the Club World Cup biennially post-2029. Qatar appears most likely to host any 2031 edition, a scenario that might prove simpler to implement if the suggested adjustments are implemented considering cold-weather timing would become necessary.

Concerns About Domestic Games Abroad

Infantino said any long-term move towards staging domestic league games in foreign countries would be a “big risk”. Current situations saw authorization provided for matches in the US and Australia, stressing this approval was as a special case. The organization's ultimate decision represents a procedural step, though the president indicated the concept raised concerns.

“We have a structure featuring matches within countries, regionally and internationally,” he explained. “This framework which built soccer the world's most popular sport worldwide. Should we dismantle this framework, we gamble significantly.”

Barcelona's Return to EFC

As part of other changes during the organization's meeting, came the announcement of the Spanish team's reinstatement to the fold, which had been trailed by the club president Joan Laporta's presence at the official dinner.
