Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after former President Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and declared they should be detained and punished "through capital punishment" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Recording That Sparked the Dispute
The clip, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who formerly served in military or defense capacities.
"Like us, you all made an vow to defend and defend this national charter," the representatives declared in the brief video. "At present, the threats to our governing document don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our statutes are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you should decline unlawful commands. No one has to carry out commands that contravene the statutes or our national charter."
The Former President's Incensed Reply
The clip seemed to prompt a furious reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our United States. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Answer
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats released a joint declaration censuring the comments.
"Political violence has no position in America," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all worked our nation with exceptional patriotism and honor. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in contact with security officials "to make certain the safety of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these extreme social media posts and retract his violent language before he causes harm," the declaration added.
Representatives' Defiant Response
The officials who participated in the video also released a response.
"We are former service members and national security professionals who love this United States and took an pledge to protect and support the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we plan to maintain it. No intimidation, pressure, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president considers it punishable by execution for us to restate the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should know that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "All citizens must come together and censure the president's calls for our death and partisan aggression. This is a period for ethical certainty."
More Governmental Comments
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's remarks and posted on social media: "It's important to understand: the former president is calling for the execution of public representatives."
He added: "This represents an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this without delay and without qualification."
The GOP leader justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very harmful, you have leading members of the government instructing military personnel to defy commands, I think that is without precedent in American history."
The Republican leader also according to sources informed the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to analyze the wording and decide all that."
White House Statement
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Does the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "There are sitting members of the federal government who coordinated to organize a recorded statement to personnel of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers advising them to ignore the president's lawful orders."
She said: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is violated, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are essentially encouraging."
